Improving Sidewalk Safety, One Section at a Time
A number of Bedford House residents have asked that the sidewalks along Shelby Street, from the Bedford House toward town, be repaired.
Right now, several sections are broken badly enough that people are forced to walk in the road or risk navigating unsafe concrete. For many elderly and disabled residents, this is not a minor inconvenience. It is a real safety issue. Recently, an elderly woman suffered a bad fall because of the sidewalk conditions.
There are plenty of repairs needed across town, and everyone knows that. But this would be a strong place to start. Fixing these sidewalks, even one section at a time, would immediately improve safety for some of the residents who are most vulnerable.
Creating a map of the worst areas and compiling a list of needed repairs could be the first step toward improving both the beauty and safety of the town. While budget hurdles are part of every decision, starting with the most critical areas and working in smaller steps could help the Mayor and Town Council determine where repairs are needed most.
If there are other roads, sidewalks, or repairs that need attention, post them in the comments. Let’s keep the conversation going and highlight the places that need action.
